6 – 9 April 2017 | Exploring Place
Have you ever wanted to USE YOUR EXPERIENCE OF PLACE as inspiration for your creative work?
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SLOW DOWN and make time to really absorb your surroundings?
Would you like to use cloth, stitch and paper to evoke WHAT YOU SEE, HEAR AND SENSE IN THE WORLD AROUND YOU?
If you answered YES to one or more questions, then you should definitely sign up for this class.
6 – 9 April 2017
Debbie Lyddon is known for her work that evokes coastal environments but for this workshop you will join her in the mountain woodlands of Mugena to immerse yourself in a landscape of chestnut trees, light, shadow and birdsong.
Weather permitting, you will spend time outside, both walking and in stillness, paying attention and sensing the world: looking, listening and touching.
Your findings will be documented with drawing, mark-making, sound recording and writing.
Back in the studio your collected material will form a starting point for experiments with paper, cloth, stitch, mark-making, collage and printing to create a unique and personal record of your exploration of this place.
You will each construct a Holding Place to contain your explorations.

Debbie Lyddon is an artist and maker based in Surrey and Norfolk, UK.
Her creative practice explores landscape and place.
Her inspiration comes from experiencing and paying attention to her surroundings.
Debbie was originally a classical flautist and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
More recently she received a MA in Contemporary Textiles from the University of Hertfordshire and is an exhibiting member of The 62 Group of Textile Artists and Studio 21.
“My interest lies in the perception of natural phenomena that occur in my immediate surroundings and my current practice explores the processes of change that occur in a coastal environment. Air, wind, water, light and sound are forever shifting with continuous and infinitesimal change; my work explores these visible and invisible forces and the transformations they engender on the landscape and the objects in it.
I am not only inspired by things that are seen but also by those that are heard and can be touched and I record objects, happenings, sounds and textures that I have noticed in the environment around me. I make mixed media cloth, sculptures, installations and drawings which originate from thoughts and memories that are a consequence of experiencing place and paying attention.
I walk, notice, stitch, paint, draw, print, write and occasionally make music.
My practice aims to present a multi-sensory interpretation of my surroundings – one that can be seen, touched and heard.”
