Alicia Merrett (GB) – Consider Colour and Line

11 and 12 October 2012 | Workshop 2 days

Colour is light, energy, expressive emotion; like music, it appeals to our senses.

Line defines shape, which contains colour; they are both important elements of design.

The interaction of colours in a piece, and their extent (or quality) are of fundamental importance in visual composition.

We will carry out a series of exercises using fabrics, with the techniques of fused collage and curved piecing.

We will look at quantity, quality, harmony, dissonance, the interaction of colour, and how they all affect design.

The small pieces created in class can serve as starting points to develop larger compositions for quilts.

Alicia Merrett – Walking the Line (in Colour)

13 and 14 October 2012 | Workshop 2 days

How can we use lines in quilts? And how do they relate to colour?

We will look at lines in quilts, made with a variety of techniques: as fine pieced lines, as bonded lines, as quilting lines, as relief lines.

We will look at context and purpose, and refer to Paul Klee’s use of line, and to the work of Vassily Kandinsky, looking at their drawings as well as their paintings.

Colour will be a crucial consideration at all stages. All techniques will be demonstrated; textile mapping can be covered as well.

Each participant will start work on a piece, employing and developing those concepts and elements.

The two courses can be combined into a four day class.

Alicia Merrett – Biography

Alicia was born and grew up in Argentina, under sunny blue skies, surrounded by colour.

Her background is in photography, and her way of seeing reflects this.

She lived in London for decades, but a few years ago she moved to a small town in south west England, an area of the country which offers her quite a different kind of inspiration.

What is particularly notable about Alicia’s work is her striking use of colour. Once the theme and overall design of a piece are clear in her mind’s eye, she creates her pieces mostly in an intuitive way, free-cutting, piecing, stitching, collaging, fusing, and machine quilting. Sometimes she screen-prints text on her quilts.

Her recent work has been inspired by maps.

Alicia’s aim is to offer visual enjoyment to the views, just like music appeals to our emotions.
